Girls vs. Boys: Which is easier to raise?

Share
I have a daughter. She's freaking awesome, but I've met people who only have boys and couldn't be happier about it.

"I'll take 10 boys over one girl," I overheard a woman say while I was maturnity shopping in Old Navy. I rushed to put my hands over my belly, doing my best to cover the spot where I thought her ears might be.

"Don't listen to her," I told me baking baby.

Are girls really that hard? I've hear so many women say they don't want girls.

"Too much attitude."

"Too much hair."

"Too moody."

Maybe women who say this know they put their own mothers through it, and aren't ready for the karma. I'm not sure what the deal is, but people definitely seem to favor boys.  I favor healthy babies, regardless of the sex, but I still feel the need to look a little deeper into this issue. For those of you that prefer boys, leave a comment and let me know why. For those of you that prefer girls, do the same. I'll start. (See my comment below.)

  1. I have no preference, but I'll speak up for the girls since I have one.

  2. I have two girls and one boy. The girls are 12 and 9. The boy is 4. Clearly I have more experience with girls.

Girls: Are girlie(usually) Clothes are sooo easy to come by. You understand their state of emotions. They communicate well. They are very dramatic. If more than two girls play together one will usually end up hurt. Girls can be very mean and bossy.

Boys: Play rough. Even at this young age, my son is already the alpha male. He is overly sensitive, but hasn't yet learned that it isn't "manly" to overreact to things. Clothes are extremely hard to come by. So are toys. Boys can play in small and large groups and they seem to get along.

The truth is...they are both wonderful and they are both difficult. There are different problems with both genders. You have the right attitude when you say, "Healthy babies is all that matters." Indeed!

  3. I really hate the whole boy vs. girl gender preference thing. I feel like it upholds sexist notions of what it means to be male or female. That said, I think raising children is difficult, period. Individual children will be easier to deal with than others but I don't think that's due solely to their gender.

I have one child, a boy, I think my biggest challenge in the gender arena will be figuring out how to raise him to be aware of his male privilege in such a way as to not have him be an active participant in sexism as he grows up.

  4. I have a girl, just about 10, and a boy, just about 2 1/2. I have NO idea how hard my son will be to raise when he is my daughter's age, but looking back, I have to say that she was the easier baby. She wasn't aggressive at all. Boys are rough. They will pull your hair, smack you, and jump on top and wrestle you if they catch you on the floor. <3 I love it. I wouldn't trade either experience for the world. My thought on the whole thing is this: There are parts about each sex that is more difficult to raise. Perhaps for a mom a son is easier (that whole mother/son, father/daughter adage thing there), but even though my daughter is full of trouble (she is ADHD and does have mood issues), I wouldn't trade the experience for anything else in the world. I do hope that my son doesn;t have ADHD, but he is getting his own brand of trouble, LOL. He's as loving and sweet as they come, and as rough as a boy can get too. My daughter is obstinate, independent, and hella smart. She's proving to be a tough one to raise, but I'm open for the challenge.

  6. Girls are fun! Yes moody, yes lots of hair, and yes very bossy, but also very loving and affectionate and so much fun!
